An 84-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease presented to the emergency department with shortness of breath. During his 3-day-long hospitalization in September 2005, the author evaluated the patient through conversation and observation based on Gordons 11 criteria for a functional health state Physical problems included poor gas exchange secondary to his disease, inadequate clearing of respiratory secretions, and low activity tolerance. The author addressed those problems through proper nursing care. The patient was taught an effective cough method and breathing exercises. As a result of this care, the patient improved both subjectively (decreased dyspnea) and objectively (better gas exchange). The patient also benefited from simple daily self-care training and developed greater activity tolerance.
